Hadik

Hadik Kávéház

True, the dense downtown area is in Pest, therefore, one finds a higher agglomeration on coffee places there. But crossing the bridge from time to time, you’ll also find a host of opportunities for bumping into the one or other coffee house. So, now it is about time to take a look on the other side of the river as well! Today’s sunshine loaded weather suggests it might be a good idea to keep looking for a place with patio or terrace.

You’ll find one of those, when walking up the main street, Bartok Béla from the Gellért Hotel towards Móricz Zsigmond and Kosztolányi Dezsö square. Somewhere half along your way, you’ll find a classy four story beige building in Classical Style on the corner. In the ground floor, there is The Hadik Café House, one of Budapest’s historical cafés.

It opened it’s doors the first time in 1906 and was the meeting ground for many artists, poets and such, back in the golden 20s era of Budapest. All of the above mentioned names did hang out at Hadik on a regular basis, Karinty was there all the time and Csontváry used to live upstairs for some time. However, back then Hadik was not famous for serving good coffee, quite the opposite.

Looking at it today, inside the café much of the old glory remains. The whole interior and furnishing rewinds time back a 100 years. Creaking wooden floor, art-nouveau olive armchairs and cherry-wood chairs and tables everywhere. Flocks of jabbering older ladies sit at the larger round tables from where big laughter arises every few minutes. Taking place in one of the big cushioned armchairs really makes you believe you just arrived here with your horse-carriage. The coffee they serve is nothing extraordinary special, you can have one pick out of the ten offerings on the menu. But in combination with their breakfast offerings, you’ll be delighted to have made the choice to come here. I can highly recommend the sugared pancake & raisins = császármorzsa in Hungarian. Then you can lean back and pick up a newspaper to read from next to your table.

Outdoors, on the patio the tourists start to flow in. But apart from those, you might still catch the sight of a long grey haired pipe smoking writer typing and scribbling notes in a script. Hadik is still a meeting place for artists and musicians – evening programs include piano and jazz concerts as well as literature soirées with readings performed by the authors.
You don’t pay a tourist price bonus, coffees are priced at 350 to 750 Ft and a breakfast or entrée comes at around 1000 Ft.

All in all, I believe it’s a very cozy place to which I come a couple of times during a year, whenever friends are visiting and we happened to walk by. Absolutely worth it. Although it is a café, you can also order lunch and dinner here. If it’s too late for a coffee, you might just go next door to Szatyor bar, which formerly was also part of the café.

Fekete

Fekete: where fresh milk and 100% arabica meets, and with adding a little bit of magic results a cup of perfect creamy coffee. So far, our favorite coffee place opened 12 days ago and is at Múzeum körút 5, 15 steps away from McDonald's at Astoria towards Kálvin tér. Although, it is a very tiny place and maybe more comfy for a take-away, it is surely a must!

Fekete definitely focuses on serving a high quality coffee. We had the chance to find out what is the secret recipe of a perfect cup of coffee. The short answer was: 'A good barista'. The more detailed answer, besides a good barista, a good coffee machine and direct trade of coffee. The good machine is given, Fekete has one from Florence, and the coffee itself comes directly from the farmers to the roasting plant and than straight to the coffee place. The place uses two types of coffees beans to make what is than served depending on the content of milk. One of them is 100% arabica coming from a Hungarian roaster in Vienna and the other is a blend of 60% Ethiopian and 40% El Salvadorian coffee that is more suitable with coffee having a high content of milk. The type of milk also makes a difference in the taste of the coffee. The best choice is milk with high protein content (not the same as high fat content of milk!) that is fresh and directly coming from the owner of the cow. This milk is more sweet than those bought in the supermarket. We didn't believe this, however we were convinced by tasting the milk separately. So basically no additional sugar needs to be added to the coffee. And last, but not least, the very nice barista at Fekete has almost 5 years of experience in making coffee in London and Budapest, ranging from big multinational coffee houses to small coffee places. The coffee he made we rated 11 on a 10 point scale :) Absolutely perfect!

We both chose a latte and shared a chocolate croissant. The coffee was absolutely perfect. The milk was very creamy and the espresso had a very silky taste. The latte was very smooth and revealed the high quality of the ingresients. Indeed, we didn't add any sugar, the latte was as sweet, as it should. The coffee was simply but classy served, and we got our favorite little heart in the milk :) The croissant was just prepared. Is there anything better than a warm, soft croissant filled with nutella and chocolate bits at the top?

There is a wide variety of drinks to chose from. Besides the different classical types of coffees, many kind of teas, hot chocolate, milk, juices and also fröccs (wine and soda) is on the menu. Different croissants, cookies and sandwiches are offered. The pastries are always fresh and the small bottles of juices are made of bio fruits. Our favorite is unquestionably the chocolate croissant.

The interior of Feketeis also worth to mention. Besides the antique style door inside the placethat is locked and serves as decoration, the dominating colors are black and white.Forgot to mention, ‘fekete’ means ‘black’in Hungarian, so in addition to associating with coffee, the name also match thecolor of the furniture and accessories. The style of the place is more modernwith a catchy design. By its own, everything would seem simple, but together itcombines to accurately designed and enjoyable atmosphere. The accessories aremainly cups, teas and potato chips that can be bought, the mysterious door, and thecoffee machine itself. The place is very tiny, it has only four chairs, howeverthis compact size is also an important element of the design. Tables areplanned for the summer, so we agreed to come back for another cup of coffee.

Nothing more to say, rather than share a video of how our latte was made and recommend a cup of coffee at Fekete :)

Kontakt store & Coffee

Hey everyone,

Here we are again and today we discovered a very unique coffee place, which we definitely would like to share with you!

Although it is in the center of the city between Astoria and Deák Ferenc square, the place is quite hidden from the eyes of tourists and pedestrians. It is in a small courtyard called Röser udvar, that opens from Károly körút 22, right the opposite side of the Zinagogue, next to Spar supermarket. We had the luck to discover this place as Petra walks by it every day on her way to the office. It was not a question whether to taste the coffee at Kontakt

When we say 'unique', we really mean it, as this place is an unmatched combination of Apple, design and coffee shop. For the first sight it seems weird isn't it? Well, we  totally agree. However, after having a chance to talk with the owners, this combo makes sense and its origin is well understandable. The two owners of the place (a nice couple married 7 months ago) studied design before and Péter is very much a tech fan, and not surprisingly they both love coffee. So after completing their first project of deciding to stay together for a lifetime, their dream was to create something together, something unique and outstanding, something about coffee, 'iGadgets' and being cozy... They worked very hard to make this dream come true and their passion was reborn as Kontakt Store. The name Kontakt well reflects their idea: it reveals connection between people, technology and proximity - the world we currently live in.

The unique concept of Kontakt is also embodied in the interior design of the place. Stepping into a small room having a big table in the middle with a few chairs around it, and a sofa next to the wall remind us of a homey living room. Looking around the room we saw stuff not being typical for a coffee shop: Apple devices, young Hungarian designer made cell phone and laptop cases hanging on the wall, and very contemporary designed and constructed furniture.  What was even more surprising, there were iPhones on the table for the guests to use, and chargers for those who are running out of battery. Besides the sofa and the table with the chairs, anything can be purchased: the lamps made of paper and buttons, the deco gadgets, and even the newest MacBook Air. Indeed, all this weird stuff well reached its aim of creating a cozy living room with a friendly atmosphere that brings people together and totally redesign the definition of 'having a cup of coffee'.

As you might already noticed, the uniqueness of this place does not stem from the specialty of coffee, but more from the innovating concept of a coffee shop. Despite, a good quality coffee is served that is available rather for the mass. Illy has an international fame of being a high quality espresso coffee at an affordable price and is present in many coffee places around the city. Illy provides both the machine and the coffee itself, as well as trains the baristas how to prepare it. Basically, it is more like a standardized coffee, so the taste of it was not surprising (we all had Illy coffee before). The serving of the coffee was simple without any bits of cookie by the side, no small heart in the steamed milk, nor brawn sugar. We missed that... To accompany our latte and cappuccino we had the daily cake that is made by the wife every morning following a well proven recipe by her husband. The cherry pie was very delicious, it had a real home-made smell and had lots of juicy cherries inside. It was sugar free, and was made with honey. Very tasty, definitely has a place on the To-taste list :) Currently the menu is quite narrow, consisting of 4 types of coffees and the daily cake, but the owners are working on offering more varieties of cakes and coffees and also juices, sandwiches and other snacks.

What really ensured the good impression was the warm welcoming of the owners, who happen to be the baristas as well. They were happy to sit down with us for a coffee and tell the story about the place, their experiences and just to get to know each other. We felt like sitting down in a comfy living room, having a nice talk with a friend while forgetting all the problems we are worried about. We think nowadays these places are difficult to find. Today, coffee often means grabbing a take away cup to be awake and carry on with the daily rush.  We had the chance to ask the owners about the uniqueness of the place and what Kontakt really is:

Although, Kontakt may seem a weird place full of Apple products and innovative design stuff, and may also make you feel a bit uncomfy by its emptiness and tininess, but as you discover more the place, the more you will like it. Kontakt is definitely a place to visit and experience this unique concept :)
